Holiday Portraits | Ft. Lauderdale Photographer

One of the things sitting on my to do list now for weeks is to finalize the holiday card designs that we are going to offer here at the studio.  Well today I finished it!!!!  What a feeling of accomplishment.  I am so excited to unveil the holiday cards that courtney ortiz photography will be offering to clients this year.  I loved this design set from the moments I first saw it on the Design Aglow blog months ago.  Well I went back and forth for so long (too long) contemplating so many different designs, that I just said “enough is enough!  This has to get done!”  I went with what I loved to begin with.  Lessoned learned….”go with your gut!”

These are 5×7, double sided, full color, flat cards printed on thick linen texture card stock complete with envelopes.  They are fully customizable.

I can’t make up my mind as to which one I’ll use for my own family’s card.  You’ll just have to look in your mailbox come December.

So now’s the time to book your holiday portrait session.  Slots are filling up fast.  Holiday mini sessions are available at the studio Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturdays.

Call the studio at 954-558-6893 for more information!

Friends… | Ft. Lauderdale Photographer

Some of our very best friends just left today for Chicago.  Not for vacation, but to live.   Marshall got transferred, and in less than 4 weeks since they found out they were moving, they’re gone.  She was one of my first very good friends in the neighborhood.  She sold my house.   Her son was Owen’s first best “male” friend.  But such is life.  People come and go.  And now we have a place to stay in Chicago.  Can’t wait to visit there in December!!!

I miss you already.

They came for a studio session on Saturday, but before I post any of those I went through pictures I had taken all throughout the past year and chose some of my favorites.

Daily Candy | Ft Lauderdale Photographer

In an attempt to get some new shots of my kids, that was mostly spent crying and fighting over a Transformer toy, I managed this one.  Both of their birthdays are next month.  Owen will be four and Stella two.  But as they sit there still 3 and 1, I can see them as teenagers.  Sitting there waiting for Mom to take their picture already.  Stella, just shy of two years looks so much older and mature in this image.  My children never cease to amaze me, and I really get excited for what lies ahead.

Lifestyle Session | Miami Family Photographer

10 Months ago Mom got in contact with me to schedule a Lifestyle Session.  We set the date and time, session was paid in full, and the day before we were supposed to meet she calls to say that one of her twin girls has a severe eye infection.  10 months and two surgeries later we were finally able to meet up.  I’m actually glad we had to wait (although I wish it was for a different reason).  What would have been 4 month old twin baby girls, were now 14 month old toddler girls.  Running this way and that way, full of smiles and laughter.  There are, currently, three gorgeous children in the family.

Four year old boy!

Beautiful twin girls!

Throughout all that this family has been through in the past year, Mom gets pregnant.  She’s 31 weeks!  Basically, four under four.  This mom deserves a party!

MK Kids | Miami Children's Photographer

Summer is officially over here in South Florida.  Which means modeling season is starting.  As a child and family photographer, I get quite a few inquiries from parents that are interested in getting their kids “in the business”.   As the South Florida modeling season quickly approaches (my son has his first “gig” of the season tomorrow down in Islamorada for Next, a clothing company from the UK) I thought it would be a great opportunity to answer some FAQ’s regarding the modeling industry here in sunny FLA.  It’s my pleasure to introduce to you Michelle Karoly, owner of the leading child modeling and talent management company, MK Kids.  (This is the first ever interview on the courtney ortiz photography blog.  Maybe a new feature!)

Hi Michelle, welcome to the courtney ortiz photography blog.  Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a thirty-something mother, daughter and wife. I was born and raised in South Florida and have always had an interest in the modeling industry and fashion in general. I am married to my best friend and have two amazing, beautiful children.

How did you get involved in the modeling industry?

I became involved in children’s modeling through my own kids. They are still very much involved in the industry. After being involved with them for a few seasons I realized just how much I enjoyed the industry and just how knowledgable I had become.
What was the motivating force behind MK Kids?
I started MK Kids as a way to assist parents of children get and stay in the business. I also saw a need for a smaller, more personal approach, where the manager truly was managing and helping their talent in every way.
What is the difference between an agent and a manager?
An agency represents many individuals and is not involved with anything you do with other agencies. If you are represented by more than one agency, you have to deal with all the agencies on your own and juggle it all yourself. Although they promote you, you are one of many individuals they represent.
A manager, on the other hand, works with a select group of individuals and therefore the relationship is much more personal and informative. You only have to deal with your manager, who then in turns deals with all the various agencies for you. You are signed solely with the manager who then sends you out to all the castings through the various agencies he/she is partnered with.
What should a parent do if their child is interested in getting involved in the modeling/entertainment industry?
All a parent has to do is submit a few snapshots along with the standard information (D.O.B., height and clothing size). Professional photographs are not necessary when submitting. A reputable manager/agency only makes money when your child makes money, so be careful of any manager/agency that requires you to pay any upfront fees.
What do you look for in kids?
There isn’t one specific thing we look for in kids.  Personality does play a big factor in child modeling.  A child who isn’t afraid of the camera and is able to connect with the camera certainly catches our eye.

And because what parent doesn’t love gorgeous images of their kids.  Here are a few of Michelle’s own “model” children.
